Virtual NSLI-Y

Program Dates: Fall 2024 (Sept-Nov) or Winter 2025 (Jan-March)
Application Deadline: June 10, 2024 (for Fall Session)

This US Department of State funded program introduces US high school students to languages critical to US national security – Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Russian, and Turkish – in an interactive online format. Virtual NSLI-Y (National Security Language Initiative for Youth) also introduces participants to the people and culture of places where the target language is spoken and fosters intercultural understanding. Students are placed in virtual beginner-level classes of approximately 10 students each. Classes are 90 minutes long and meet twice a week for 10 weeks. Applications are now open for the Fall 2024 session. Applicants must be US citizens, 15-18 years old, and without prior formal instruction in the target language. The program is free to participants. Students who complete the Virtual NSLI-Y program are eligible to apply for the regular NSLI-Y study abroad program.
