YFU honors Globalize DC Director

Being recognized for one’s work is always such a pleasant surprise. It’s especially gratifying when the honor comes from a valued partner.

On October 26, 2016, as part of its 65th Anniversary Celebration, Youth For Understanding USA (YFU) announced the selection of Globalize DC’s founder and Executive Director, Sally Schwartz, for its 2nd Annual Distinguished Educator Award. This national award is for “significant contributions to the field of education through service and commitment to the value and importance of cultural exchange and experience of students.” The gala event, held at YFU’s headquarters, raised funds to support YFU’s Financial Aid Fund for American students to study abroad.

Youth for Understanding USA is a global leader in nonprofit educational exchanges, which offers school-year, semester, summer, and gap year programs in more than 40 countries for US high school and college students. For many years, DC students have participated in and benefited from YFU programs. Learn more about YFU and its program offerings here.

Onigiri Event at YFU

In 2014, YFU USA moved its national headquarters back into Washington, DC to the historic Wonder Bread Factory at 7th & S Streets, NW. The renovated facility offers unique meeting and event space, and Globalize DC is grateful to have been hosted by YFU for several of our student programs. Most recently, on November 30th, our Japanese Plus program held its “Change the World with Onigiri” event there.

“Change the World with Onigiri” is a social action campaign, sponsored by TABLE FOR TWO, which uses the popular Japanese food, onigiri (rice ball), to promote healthy eating while raising funds to provide one million meals to children in need around the world and in the US. Our Japanese Plus students learned how to make onigiri, and posted photos of their yummy creations. School meals were donated for each photo posted. Learn more about this innovative program here, and its sponsor, TABLE FOR TWO.

Thanks, Youth For Understanding, for the use of your kitchen! We couldn’t have done it without you.
